Skills on Gain

What to know

Skills are reusable instruction files that teach AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT how to best work with tools they have access to.

It means your LLM can interact with Gain's MCP and Excel Integration, and get to consistent outputs without you having to prompt it exactly every time.

What are skills?

A skill is a small file of expert instructions that an AI assistant loads when it recognises a matching task. 

Think of it as a playbook: instead of explaining Gain's formula syntax or comps methodology every time you ask for something, the skill carries that knowledge. 

Skills work alongside the Gain connector (MCP) and the Gain Excel add-in. 
The connector and add-in give the assistant access to verified Gain data; the skill teaches it what to do with that data.

How is a skill different from the Gain MCP connector?
 
  • The MCP connector is the data pipe - it lets LLMs retrieve verified data from Gain
     
  • The skill is the a playbook on how to use it - in the case of our comps analysis, it tells your LLM what a comps analysis is, what data Gain holds on valuation for private and public company and how to output that into a structured Excel 
     
What do I need to be able to use Skills?
  • An LLM that supports skills (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT and many others)
     
  • For MCP related skills: An activated MCP subscription and a paid LLM subscription
     
  • For the Gain Excel integration related skills: An installed Gain in Excel Integration, and Claude / ChatGPT / your LLM as an Excel Add-in

Installing a Skill

  1. Download the skill file (zipped) from the links above. 
  2. Add it to Claude or ChatGPT (from Settings -> Skills -> Upload), or ask your workspace admin to enable it for your team.
  3. Connect Gain: make sure the Gain connector is enabled in Claude, or the Gain add-in is installed in Excel. 
  4. Just ask: skills trigger automatically when your request matches. You don't need to mention the skill by name.

 

FAQs

Are skills safe / is my data private?
  • Yes, always. Skills are instruction files only - they contain none of your data. Your prompts and results stay entirely within your own environment. You can read our skills files and see the instructions we have provided to the model.
Which AI assistants do skills work with?
  • Our skills are built and tested for Claude and ChatGPT, but should work with other LLMs that support skill-style instructions.
Can I edit a skill for my own workflow?
  • Yes. Skill files are readable text, and you're welcome to adapt them. You can edit the files directly, or use your AI assistant to edit the skills in you
