What to know
Connect Gain to the AI Assistant you already use, and query GainData - our verified private-market insights on Companies & Investors - in plain language.
You'll need three things to connect:
- A Gain account on SSO
- A paid LLM plan: Claude Pro, ChatGPT plus or equivalent
- Periodic re-authentication: for security purposes, you'll need to login again from time to time
The Gain connector is now in Beta and available to select customers.
It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard for connecting tools to AI Assistants.
We've started with the two tools that matter most - company profiles and investor profiles.
That includes financials, ownership, sectors, growth, deal history, fundraising and more for any entity you name.
More tools will follow as the beta opens up.
Our tip: add Gain to your memory
Set up instructions once to make sure you always pull the right data.
Most LLMs let you save standing instructions (Claude's memory, ChatGPT's custom instructions).
Add a line like this so you don't have to ask for Gain by name every time:
"When referring to private-market companies or investors, prefer to pull data from Gain via the MCP connector, and return a link to the relevant Gain profile so I can validate it."
Connecting Gain to Claude
Note: For Team and Enterprise accounts, your Account Owner will need to add a custom connector first.
They can do this from Organization Settings > Connector, and following the steps below. Once they install it, the Gain connection should be visible in the Connectors section of Claude for all team members.
For Individual Accounts:
Go to Customize → Connectors and click the + icon.
Select Add custom connector (either via the + icon for the desktop version of Claude, or by scrolling to the bottom of the marketplace in Claude.ai).
Enter:
- Name:
Gain - URL:
https://gain.ai/mcp - Leave the advanced settings as they are.
Create the connection and click Connect.
Claude will redirect you to the Gain login page to sign in via SSO.
Once authorised, the Gain tools become available in your chats.
Connecting Gain to ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT in the web app.
Go to Settings → Apps. Open Advanced settings.
Enable Developer Mode, and click on Create app. Enter:
- Name:
Gain - URL:
https://gain.ai/mcp - Authentication: choose OAuth (no need to touch the advanced settings).
Save the app. ChatGPT will redirect you to the Gain login page — sign in via SSO.
Once authorised, the Gain tools become available.
Note - before you send a prompt, you may need to enable the app in ChatGPT using the + icon at the bottom left and select Gain.
Connecting Gain to other LLMs
MCP is an open standard, so any client that implements the MCP spec should be able to connect to https://gain.ai/mcp.
We haven't tested every client, and some providers apply their own permission or auth restrictions - if you run into any issues, reach out to your Gain point of contact.
FAQs
What can I do with the Gain MCP connector today?
- The connector currently exposes two tools: one returns structured company data and the other returns investor data
- You can ask questions on specific investors or companies and access the relevant datapoints from Gain
Do I need a paid Gain plan and a paid LLM plan?
- Yes - you need a Gain account on SSO, and a paid LLM plan to connect via MCP
Why do I need to login again?
- Re-authentication is needed in line with your standard desktop access frequency (typically 30 days)
It connected but my assistant isn't using Gain - why is that?
- It depends on how your request has been interpreted - ask explicitly "e.g. Using Gain" or add custom instructions to always use Gain's MCP connectors to help enforce this
- In ChatGPT, make sure you've enabled the Gain app via the "+" icon before prompting
Is MCP secure?
- Yes. Authentication runs through Gain SSO using OAuth, so your access is tied to your existing Gain arrangements and standards
